Life on medication for Hereford metal worker

Steven Bond-Lewis will spend the rest of his life on medication following a serious accident at his workplace. The metal worker from Hereford was crushed by falling machinery containing molten metal, leaving him with such severe organ damage that he expects to live the rest of his life on medication.
After having spent eighteen days on a life support machine, Steven had to endure operations including the removal of half of his bowel and operations for the 25% burns sustained in the accident. The 37-year-old required psychological support to come to terms with the incident, and said that despite his wife and children being very supportive, the first stages were “really difficult”. It has now been four years since the accident and Steven still physically struggles everyday.
No routine checks in fifteen years
Steven’s employer ‘Special Metal Wiggin Limited’ was fined a total of £120,000 on Monday (22nd of July). The case brought forward by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) saw the judge at Worcester Crown Court ordering the Hereford firm to pay costs of £55,000 and additional compensation to Mr. Bond-Lewis. The company admitted to their failure in maintaining health and safety checks, with routine checks not being carried out in the last fifteen years.
Special Metal Wiggin Limited said they deeply regret the incident and that: “the company has fully co-operated with the Health and Safety Executive throughout its investigations and has made a number of improvements in its health and safety systems to further try and ensure there are no similar incidents in the future”.
