Mother sues over son’s shattered dreams

The mother of a young man who had dreamed of a career in the Royal Marines since a young age is suing them for over £1million after her son fell during a dangerous training exercise. The exercise required the men to complete a high-level assault course called ‘Tarzan’. When 19-year-old James Cobby reached the stage known as ‘Jacob’s Ladder’, he fell 7m hitting a high-tension cable on the way down.

Mr Cobby (now 22) suffered life-changing injuries from the fall and will require 24hr care for the rest of his life. When he fell from the assault course, he landed directly on his head, causing him to sustain multiple, and serious, brain injuries

Emerged from partial coma with severe impairments

Following the accident, Mr Cobby was taken directly to Derriford Hospital, where a pressure bolt was inserted into his skull. After spending a year in an almost unconscious state, he finally emerged with severe cognitive, communication and physical deficiencies.

On the 15 June 2011 the Ministry of Defence admitted liability for the accident. Despite this, both sides of the case are unable to agree upon a compensation figure for the injured man. It is believed that the compensation will be in excess of £1million due to the care that will be required to aid Mr Cobby’s condition.
