£37.8 million paid out to patients by health trust

After a family recently received compensation for the brain damage their son endured following a hospital error, figures have revealed that the health trust has paid out over £37.8 million to patients in the last ten years. Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust agreed to compensate the family of Cody Lyster-Hughes £6.5m earlier this week – one of the biggest payouts the health trust has ever made.
Following the announcement of this settlement, figures detailing other payouts were released under the Freedom of Information Act. It was found that almost £38 million had been paid out to sufferers of medical negligence, with more than £7.5 million of it having been paid out in the last financial year alone.
Serious delay in treatment
The most recent settlement went to Cody and his family after doctors failed to treat Caroline Lyster for an infection she was suffering with while seven-and-a-half months pregnant. She had been admitted to the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in April 2005, but she was discharged soon after with a course of antibiotics. Four days later a pathology report found her to be suffering with E-coli. As a result of the delay in treatment, the baby had already been infected. Cody was subsequently born with severe disabilities.
The director of performance assurance across Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, Wendy Booth, said: “An apology has been provided and a settlement agreed which will be used to secure Cody’s future and provide him with the care and therapies he requires.”
