Family seek answers following spleen rupture death

Posted in: Bicycle Accidents Medical Negligence Wrongful & Accidental Death

The family of a man who died of an undiagnosed ruptured spleen has described the fact that nobody has been held accountable for their son’s death as “shameful”. John Moore-Robinson, aged 20, died after being sent home from Stafford Hospital with a ruptured spleen that doctors had failed to recognise. His parents, Frank and Janet Robinson, feel that someone should be held accountable.

Mr Moore-Robinson died in his Leicestershire home in 2006. He had been admitted to hospital following a bike accident on Cannock Chase, but was sent home diagnosed with bruised ribs. Hours after he returned home he collapsed and died.

Failed to comply with six national standards

An internal inquest into the death criticised the care provided at Stafford Hospital. An investigation into the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust found that between 2005 and 2009 there were between 400 and 1,200 more deaths than expected. A second inquest revealed that the hospital’s A&E department was failing to comply with six national standards, all of which contributed to Mr Moore-Robinson’s death.

Since the death, the family received an apology from the Department of Health and recently had a meeting with the Secretary of State, Jeremy Hunt. Although they described it as a “fruitful meeting”, they still want someone to be held responsible.

Mr Robinson said: “People did some dreadful things after John died and none of them have been held to account and we feel nobody will, which is shameful.
