NHS apology over ‘unacceptable’ wait

Posted in: Medical Negligence NHS Claims

A woman who was forced to wait for a year to have an operation for her severely painful womb condition has been sent an apology from the NHS. Dawn O’Toole was diagnosed with endometriosis in 2014 – a painful condition whereby tissue that behaves like that in the lining of the womb, is found outside the womb. She urgently required a hysterectomy following the diagnosis, but never received an operation date.

She was forced to wait for a year to have a full hysterectomy and colon-rectal surgery, despite being in such severe pain she could barely walk. Ms O’Toole, being a mother of three, said: “I feel more for my kids who are suffering from it because I can’t do my usual stuff”. She said that her family life was greatly affected by these treatment delays.

“this was unacceptable”

The chief nurse and deputy chief executive at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Suzanne Hinchliffe, said that they were going to contact Ms O’Toole to personally apologise for the delays in her surgery, and discuss the next steps of her treatment.

A locum consultant, who later left the trust, initially examined Ms O’Toole. Her case was then passed on to multiple surgeons until her current consultant took on the case.  Ms Hinchliffe said: “The clinical decision on whether to progress to the next stage of her treatment was therefore delayed and we acknowledge this was unacceptable”.
