20% of England’s radiotherapy machines past scrappage date

An investigation carried out under the Freedom of Information act, has revealed that one in five of the radiotherapy machines being used in hospitals throughout England, are past their scrappage date.  The European Society of Radiology recommends that in order to keep up with advances in technology and offer the best treatment possible, machines should not operate for more than 10 years.  Older machines can be putting patients at serious risk, according to the report, as lack of precision can be creating serious side effects that could cause irreversible harm.

Psychiatric hospital closed for putting patients at ‘serious risk’

Despite a recent £2million investment in a psychiatric hospital in York, the hospital has been closed because patients were found to be at ‘serious risk’. Despite a £2m spend on improvements, a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection earlier this month made some worrying findings and ordered the hospital to be closed and clinical services moved.

Mental health outsourcing raises concerns

Campaigners argue that a health trust’s new plan to outsource mental health care by putting patients on Skype to workers in “lower wage countries” is unacceptable. The idea was proposed in a recent report put forward by the mental health trust for Norfolk and Suffolk.  Unison, which represents mental health staff, said that the idea failed to show any understanding of how mental health care actually works. A trust spokesman said that the proposal was looked at by the government but immediately dismissed.

Psychiatric hospital “unsuitable and unsafe”

A psychiatric hospital in York is to be closed after inspectors described it as “unsuitable and unsafe for patients”.  The Archbishop of York originally built the hospital in 1777 as the ‘County Lunatic Asylum’, which was later changed to the Bootham Park Hospital.  The hospital houses two acute admission wards, one for men and one for women, and also has an elderly assessment unit for people aged over 65. A recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), however, found the hospital to be no longer safe for patients.
